In the product of EC 4.2.2.17, O-1 of the (ω)th residue replaces O-1 of the (ω-2)th residue at C-2 of the (ω-1)th residue giving the α-anomer. Similarly, in the product of EC 4.2.2.18, O-3 of the (ω)th residue replaces O-1 of the (ω-2)th residue at C-2 of the (ω-1)th residue giving the α-anomer. The (ω)th residue is the terminal residue furthest from the reducing end.
