Notes.

1. meso-2,6-Diaminopimelate (2,6-diaminoheptanoate, A2pm) is added by EC 6.3.2.13 in Gram-negative and some Gram-positive organisms. Lysine is added by EC 6.3.2.7 in other Gram-positive organisms.

2. The enzyme EC 6.3.2.10 attaches D-Ala-D-Ala to the C-terminal residue whether it is lysine or diaminopimelate. Subsequent enzymes in the pathway act regardless of which of these residues is present in their substrates.
